Quick Guide: Viewing Device Info for Troubleshooting

Purpose

Quickly locating key device information helps diagnose hardware, software, and connectivity issues faster.

What to check first

  • Device model & manufacturer
  • Operating system & version
  • Build number / firmware
  • Serial number / IMEI (phones)
  • Available storage & memory usage
  • Battery health and charging status
  • Network status (Wi‑Fi, cellular, IP address)
  • Recent error logs or crash reports

How to find it — common platforms

  • Android: Settings > About phone (or About device). Tap Build number for developer options; look for IMEI, Android version, Storage, Battery.
  • iOS (iPhone/iPad): Settings > General > About. Check Model Name, Software Version, Serial Number, IMEI, Available Capacity, Battery Health (Settings > Battery).
  • Windows (PC): Settings > System > About for device specs and Windows edition; use System Information (msinfo32) for detailed hardware and BIOS info.
  • macOS: Apple menu > About This Mac for model, macOS version, storage, memory; System Report for detailed hardware and network info.
  • Linux: Use commands: uname -a (kernel), lsb_release -a (distro), lshw or lscpu (hardware), df -h (disk), free -h (RAM).
  • Routers/IoT: Login to device web UI — check firmware version, MAC/IP addresses, connected devices, and logs.

Quick troubleshooting checks & actions

  1. Confirm OS and firmware are up to date. Update if outdated.
  2. Check storage: Free up space if <10–15% remaining.
  3. Review battery health: Replace if capacity is significantly reduced or device shuts down unexpectedly.
  4. Inspect network info: Verify correct IP, DNS, and Wi‑Fi strength; reboot router or toggle airplane mode for flaky connections.
  5. Examine logs/crash reports: Note timestamps and error codes; search those exact codes for targeted fixes.
  6. Verify serial/IMEI for warranty or support claims.
  7. Run built-in diagnostics: Many devices offer diagnostic tools in settings or via manufacturer apps.

When to collect and share info with support

  • Include device model, OS version, build number, serial/IMEI, screenshots of errors, exact steps to reproduce, timestamps, and any recent changes (apps installed, updates).
  • Avoid sharing sensitive data (passwords, full device backups).
